Basket Ball

(By Mike Anderson)

Little black boys playing ball by the light pole
backboard bolted up top of their shouting
10 foot tall and rising
Leaning down to stab a cigarette out
And the ball ricochets off the rim
Everybody smoked marijuana with him
He drank all night and he thought of her
Carefully had memorized the curves of her legs
Still pretty despite loves stinkin smell
He hated you because it took courage to love
Balloons and blondes scaring kids
Plang pah-lang lang

Stung by life, the blossoms shake
I moved it once, sparkling beads
Hummingbirds chance upon
Flowers left by waning love
Hold the ball at the free-throw line
Natural, gliding by
Know the way, through the grades
Folded coats, after-smoke

The swans drowned in waste water up by the sign
The bull made a symphony out of the sun
A thousand days she’s been underground
Sunflowers sink down on my drunken arms
Let the maggots crawl into my mouth
I loved my life but I preferred his wife
“You’ve hurt my feelings,” she said
Plang, pah-lang lang

Stung by life, the blossoms shake
I moved it once, sparkling beads
Hummingbirds chance upon
Flowers left by waning love
Hold the ball at the free-throw line
Natural, gliding by
Know the way, through the grades
Folded coats, after-smoke
